Listening is one of the four modules in IELTS examination. This Academic and general students have same exam of listening.

Timing: This exam takes 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes extra to transfer your answer to the answer sheet at the end.

There are 40 Questions, It contains 4 sections. Each section has nearly 10 questions. Each recording is played once only. The sections get tougher as you progress  through the exam.

Section-1: It is a conversation between two people. For example –Telephonic conversation or confirming details for a reservation.
 
Section-2: This is usually a one person speaking. For example – someone providing information related to place or something else.

Section-3: It includes a conversation among several people about a particular topic. For example – students discussion related to assignments.

Section-4: It presents a lecture or speech of any topic . The lecture is complex and quite tough.

Scoring

Each question is worth 1 mark, so you can achieve up to 40 marks. For example, getting 24 out of 40 you may earn a band score 6

Question Types

1.     Short Answer- follow the word/number for short answer questions.
2.     Multiple Choice- you have to answer with letters (A,B,C) on your Answer sheet against number of question.
3.     Form completion- it is a type of Section -1. It requires phone number or address on these forms.
4.     Sentence completion- it is like a short answer question. It is necessary to look the direction for word and number count.
5.     Diagram/Map questions: it includes missing labels and you have to fill in based on what the speakers say.
6.     Matching: matching questions involve listening detailed information in the discussion. The answer should be in letter.


Strategies

1.     Analyze the questions – Speaker gives 30-40 seconds to look at the questions in each section. It is very important to study the upcoming questions.
-         What type of question is this?
-         How should you answer?
-         What are the keywords in the questions?

2.     Predict the answer- After analyzing, you are close to prediction with the help of grammatical knowledge for example “in” indicates that date can be answer. In 1948. If the sentence ends with preposition you need to listen a noun. For example- sentence ends with preposition ‘with’ then concentrate on noun, it can be related to any place, name etc.

3.     Tracking- It requires great attention questions always come in order you should keep your eye on the next question as well.

Do’S

1.     Read the direction carefully.
2.     Make sure your type of answer is correct. One set of answer define there words like long waiting list and other can be two words and or number as 4 sides.
3.     Be sure about the spellings
4.     You will have 10 minutes to transfer your answer, use this time carefully.
5.     If you miss an answer, just move on the next question. Don’t waste time.
6.     Concentrate on each and every question carefully.

Don’ts

1.     Don’t write your listening answers on the answer sheet while you are listening.
2.     If you write abbreviation at time of listening, write it legible that can be easily understood while transferring answer.
